As Funk emerged, the London scene embraced it as forward and progressive. Manchester didn’t, instead broadening it’s musical growth sideways to uncover lesser known artists within the established genre. This surfacing of obscure and often very rare records added a sound flavour unique to Northern England. Dave Godin referred to this flavour as Northern Soul and a new genre was born.
